YOUTH OF THE YEAR, WINS STATE TITLE

 

Grant moves on to Southeast Regional competition in Atlanta in June

At the recent VA/DC Boys & Girls Clubs Area Council State Youth of the Year competition, Governor Bob McDonnell announced that Tevonte Grant, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond’s Youth of the Year, won the State Youth of the Year Competition. Grant moves on to the Southeast Regional Youth of the Year competition in Atlanta in June for the opportunity to win additional awards and scholarship funds.

 

On February 25, 2010 at the 9th Annual Distinguished Leadership Awards Dinner at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, in front of an audience of 450 guests, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond proudly announced Tevonte Grant as its 2010 Youth of the Year and awarded him a $15,000 scholarship to further his education and pursue his dreams.

 

Tevonte is a Richmond Public School student who will graduate from Open High School in June. He has been a member of his Club for 9 years and plans to attend James Madison University. In his acceptance speech, Tevonte stated how proud he is to be the first person in his family to go to college. He also thanked his mother for her tremendous support, acknowledging how hard she has worked to provide for he and his three brothers, as a single working mom.

 

Youth of the Year is a national program which recognizes young people for their leadership abilities, their commitment to their Club and their community, their future goals, and their ability to persevere through obstacles.

 

Background on Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond (www.bgcmr.org) comprises twelve units throughout the Metro Richmond area, including Petersburg, Hopewell and Chesterfield. Clubs are strategically located to reach our area’s most vulnerable children.
