Mentoring The Next Generation

During National Mentoring Month, we recognize the importance of youth mentorship. Mentors not only encourage youth, but attribute to outcomes like academic success, increased confidence, and social and emotional well-being.

Despite this, only 1 in 3 youth have mentors encouraging them to make good decisions and guiding them towards their goals. Our programming and dedicated staff at Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond work to ensure our youth have mentors and feel supported in their journey to adulthood. We are proud to share nearly 80% of Club members self-reported they feel adults at the Club listen to and understand them.

Here are three ways youth receive mentorship at Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond.

  1. Pathways Coaching

Pathways Coaching is one way youth receive individualized mentorship. In working with Pathways Coaches, like Ms. Sally, youth identify short and long-term goals and tactics to achieve them. The mentorship youth receive helps them remain focused, learn how to adapt, and become proactive about their future.

  1. Leadership Programs

Building strong leaders is a core component of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond programming. Our programs like Youth of the Year and Keystone mentor youth to become caring, passionate members of society. Through these programs, youth grow both academically, socially and professionally. Over the course of a year, youth practice essay writing, mock interviews, and public speaking, helping them hone in on their vision and confidently share their ideas.

  1. Peer Mentorship

Club members also receive mentorship from other members who are Junior Staff. This leadership role gives older Club members the opportunity to finesse their strengths and build vital work experience through supporting the daily tasks at the Club. Junior Staff shadow staff members as they learn how the Club operates and how they can be a positive role model for younger members.
