Bright Minds, Bright Futures: Creating Safe Spaces for Mental Wellness

Mental health is crucial to our overall well-being, especially for children and teenagers. Unfortunately, many young people struggle with mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, and stress. Keep reading to learn more about how youth are building resilience and confidence at Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond.

What is Social-emotional learning (SEL)?

Social-emotional learning (SEL) is the process of developing self-awareness, self-management, self esteem, and interpersonal skills. Social-emotional learning positively impacts mental health, academics, employability, and contribution to society. A core focus of our programs, focusing on SEL ensures youth are developing vital skills, such as conflict resolution and decision making, that will lead them to live successful, fulfilling lives.

Partnering to Promote Youth Mental Wellness

Our long-standing partnership with Challenge Discovery Projects is increasing access to mental health tools and skill development for youth. For years, Challenge Discovery Projects has offered programs addressing areas of concern for youth like gun violence prevention, bullying, and interpersonal conflict.

Through small group programs offered by Challenge Discovery Projects, youth have a safe space to openly discuss their challenges, find a community of support, and learn how to manage their emotions in a calm, constructive manner. By addressing mental health in a group setting, youth develop a supportive community where they feel safe and understood. Group programs also help youth learn how to interact with their peers and manage their emotions in a group setting.

For our youth, they have really been immersed in an environment where it’s sometimes been tough to make good decisions. They need more people to tell them what’s right and what’s good.
